Long-term care after COVID-19: experiences from Brazil
Since 2011 the Older Peoples’ Care Program (Programa Maior Cuidado, PMC) has been supporting care-dependent older people living with vulnerable families in poor districts of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Health posts and social assistance centres work together to identify eligible families and provide integrated support. Paid caregivers from similar communities are recruited and trained by an NGO and provide families 10-20 hours of support a week. PMC carers operate as bridges between older people, families and local health and social assistance services. They monitor older people’s condition and report back to monthly case reviews. From 2023 new versions of PMC were piloted in other Brazilian cities, with support from the Ministry of Health and are now included 2025 National Care Plan. This process has been accompanied and supported by intensive research and evidence-generation. Here are some examples of that work.
Much more material about PMC is available in Portuguese and more material will be published in the near future. If you would like to know more, please contact Peter Lloyd-Sherlock (peter.lloyd-sherlock@northumbria.ac.uk).
